Wacky Wednesday :: Scott Bird

For my first Wacky Wednesday I wanted to start off with a funny story.  It is still incredibly awkward for me, but everyone else seems to think it's incredibly funny.  Hopefully that's how you come away from it.

Scott Bird

In 8th grade, I met one of my very best friends Malina Bird.  She and I would have so much fun together.  We got really close and I spent some quality time at her house.  I met her parents and her brother (her other brother was on his mission at the time).  Remember we were in 8th grade, her brother was 3 years older, but seemed like 10 years older.  We would have sleepovers and late nights, I call her mom Mama Bird and they call me FiFi. (That's a story for another time...)

After 9th grade, we went to different high schools.  She headed off to Pleasant Grove while I went to Timpanogos.  We stayed close though, she was really one of my best best friends.  Well, this is where our story starts.

Sophomore year was coming to a close.  It was early May, I had just turned 16.  I had already kissed two boys, but at the time had no boyfriend.  Which sucked.  My friend Amanda was dating this kid Brock? (I think thats what his name was...) and Malina was dating a boy named Treavor.  Well, a week or two after my birthday my wonderful friends threw a surprise party for me.  Amanda, Brock, and Malina were there.  To all of our surprises, we found that Malina and Brock knew each other.  This led to them wanting to all get together later.

Soon after that I found myself going along on a double date...as the fifth wheel.  Can you say AWKWARD?  But, really it was going to be fun.  I was quite excited, everyone was my friend so I didn't feel super left out.  Amanda came and picked me up, we went over to Malina's to pick up her and Treavor.  I went to the door to get them and to say hi to her family.  Mama Bird answered the door, and as I was waiting for Mina I had a little chat with her.  In the background I see Scott walk by.  He glanced over as he was passing the doorway, normal, right?  Until he took a couple steps back and looked at me for a while longer.  I thought nothing of it really, I barely noticed it until I thought about it later.  Malina came, I said goodbye to her mom and we left.

As we were driving to Brock's house, Malina's mom texted her.

Mama Bird:  Scott just said Katrina looks really cute today.

Of course Malina told me this.  I freaked out.  I really didn't look much different from any other day he had seen me.  In fact, I hadn't showered because I wanted the wavy hair look you get from taking out braids that you had worn for a full day.  But whatever, a 19 year old MAN was hitting on me!  I was ecstatic, to say the least.

I basically forced Malina to give me his number and I started texting him.  Of course, I was flirting like crazy, but I wasn't the only one.  It was really kind of a flirt fest.  The night went by, we watched "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" (the couples cuddling, while I texted away), then we went outside, I jumped on the tramp, rolled down the hill, and texted some more, while the couples looked at stars together.

Things went from there.  We became facebook friends, he commented on my pictures and told me I was pretty.  We texted through school, he even picked me and my friends up one day and took us out for lunch.  I was 16 with a 19 year old....flirting buddy?  I don't know what I would call him, but I was on top of the world.  I had someone who wasn't in high school, he had a job and a car, and he liked me.  What else could you want?

Well, I guess not everything was perfect.  I mean, he was my best friend's older brother.  I had slept over at his house without a second thought, and now things could get a little awkward.  And this is when the awkwardness started.

He wanted me to hang out with him that weekend.  Hanging out? Sure, I thought nothing of it, I kind of assumed Malina would be there too.  He came and picked me up in his nice car, and we went over to their house.  I was then informed Malina was about to leave on a date with her boyfriend.  WHAT?! Okay, I'm fine...it's just Scott, whatever.  We went downstairs to play Guitar Hero.  He told me to sit by him.  He tried to let me win, but I was still not good enough...FAIL!  Haha, after we played he asked if I wanted to see a movie.  Sure, whatever.  I ask my parents they say yes.  We leave for the movie theatre, about an hour early.  We get there and head in to buy our tickets, only to find we are at the exact same movie theatre as Malina.  AWKWARD!  Also, by this time we were holding hands.  I couldn't help it, I didn't want to say no.  Plus, I like holding hands....  We said hi to Malina, got our tickets and still had like 30 minutes before the movie started.  What to do? Oh, we should definitely go sit in his car and just listen to music....NOT.  But, thats what we did...holding hands the whole time.

Finally, we go into the theatre and sit down.  Unfortunately, this theatre's armrests went up (for those couples who don't want anything between them), and he said we should put it up.  I wasn't ready to cuddle with him, so I said it was okay, I wanted it down.  We were still holding hands so he couldn't be terribly mad.  We watched the movie (Prince Caspian) and left the theatre.  On the way home we were still holding hands, this made me a little nervous because his car was a stick shift and he had to steer and shift with one hand.  I told him we didn't have to hold hands but he said it was fine.

I asked him if he would consider this a date...he said "I would say this is a half date, because I didn't take you out for dinner, too." (So if you were wondering, a whole date consists of dinner AND a movie)  I knew my parents were going to say it was a date, and so this was technically my FIRST DATE!

When we got to my house, he got out and gave me a hug.  I noticed him leaning down before he caught my lips and turned my head just in time.  We said goodnight and I went inside.

I had the weirdest feeling.  This just didn't feel right.  He was 3 years older, he was my best friend's brother...WEIRD.  So I texted him that I thought we should just be friends, I felt really weird about this.

That's pretty much how things ended.  Until my friends decided to prank call him one day, and he happened to be with his girlfriend.  Then he texted me, he knew it was me, he started on a rant about how I was just drama and a stupid girl.  I was only 16 give me a break.  It's your fault you wanted to date a sophomore.  Just saying.

No worries, now he is happily married (to that same girlfriend) with a baby girl.  At first it was terribly awkward for me to be at their house when he was around, but I couldn't care less now.  (Pretty sure he still lives in the basement, maybe not though)  I do have to say that this was the most awkward first date story I have ever heard.  It makes me laugh a little.  He really got quite mad when I ended things....

Hope you enjoyed my first Wacky Wednesday.  Tune in next week!  :)
